Getting Started with WinVis Online
Overview
- Sign Up for an Account
- Run the License Manager
- Start using the Editors
- Download and run your Stimuli, Trials,
and Experiments
Sign up for an account
You must have a WinVis account to use WinVis software. Signing
up is quick and easy. Make sure you sign up for a subscription
package that includes WinVis online. Basic subscriptions start
at $150 per year. Get an account by going to the
registration page
(opens a new window).
Run the License Manager
To run WinVis software, you need to license your computer. When
you signed up, you chose a package that included at least one
machine license. A machine license lets you use all the WinVis
software you have signed up for on a single computer.
Get the license manager from the downloads section on the WinVis
website, and run it on the computer you will use to run your
experiments.
The License Manager will contact the WinVis server to confirm
what WinVis software you currently have permission to use. Your
permissions are determined by the package(s) you chose when you
signed up.
Start using the editors
A subscription to WinVis online gets you access to the stimulus,
trial, and experiment editors. There are many resources to get
you started using the editors. You can check the
tutorials page,
look at examples through the stimulus, trial, and experiment
search pages,
and get help in
the forums.
For in-depth descriptions of the concepts involved in WinVis
online, check out the WinVis
System Overview
or the WinVis
Design Process.
Download and Run your Stimuli, Trials, and
Experiments
When you have finished creating a stimulus, trial, or experiment,
you will be able to compile it. You may then download and run
your new creation. Running a newly completed Stimulus or Trial
executable will open a menu to edit parameters. Once those are
set, you can run the stimulus or trial, and the result will be
displayed.
If you have created an experiment, running the executable will
open a small, menu-driven program to help you set parameters for
your experiment.
Getting Started with WinVis for Matlab
Overview
- Sign Up for an Account
- Install W4M
- Setup your Matlab environment
- Run the License Manager
- Start Using W4M
- Begin Writing Scripts
Sign Up for an Account
You must have a WinVis account to use WinVis for Matlab.
Signing up is quick and easy. Make sure you sign up for
a subscription package that includes WinVis for Matlab (W4M).
Basic subscriptions start at $150 per year.
Install W4M
Once you have signed up, you need to download and install W4M.
Get the W4M installer and the WinVis License Manager at the
downloads page. Run the W4M installer. It will ask you to locate
the Matlab folder.
Setup your Matlab environment
Add WinVis to the Matlab Path
Start Matlab, and choose Set Path from the File Menu. (Make sure that
the JVM is enabled on this version. If you do not know what this means,
then ignore the previous instruction and continue). Click on Add with
Subfolders and select the destination directory you specified in the
installer. (By default: C:\Program Files\MatlabR12)
Create a shortcut to Matlab –NOJVM
Close Matlab if it is still open. Create a shortcut to Matlab on the
desktop. Right click on the shortcut and choose properties. In the
properties dialog, add -nojvm to the target. (Make sure there is a
space between matlab.exe and -nojvm).
Run the License Manager
To run WinVis for Matlab, you need to license your computer. When
you signed up, you chose a package that included at least one machine
license. A machine license lets you use all the WinVis software you
have signed up for on a single computer.
Get the license manager from the downloads section on the WinVis website,
and run it on the computer you will use to run your experiments.
The License Manager will contact the WinVis server to confirm what WinVis
software you currently have permission to use. Your permissions are
determined by the package(s) you chose when you signed up.
Start Using W4M
Startup WinVis
Open up Matlab with your newly created shortcut. At the command prompt,
type in WinVis to load the DLL. If this returns a 0, WinVis has successfully
loaded.
Load the Matlab M-File Editor
You may notice that the version of Matlab that is open (without the JVM) can
not make use of the m-file editor. In order to work around this, simply
startup the m-file editor. To do this, browse to the Matlab folder using windows
explorer. In the bin\win32 sub-folder, there is a file called meditor.exe.
Run this file to load the m-file editor. When you have finished editing your
scripts, simply save them and run them from the NOJVM version of Matlab (or
copy and paste into the command window).
Begin writing scripts
There are many resources to help you get started. You can view some of the
sample scripts
online, view the samples included with the W4M installation,
and read the W4M manual. You can also use
the forums
to ask questions and get answers about writing W4M scripts.
