What is WinVis?
WinVis is a suite of tools for designing and performing psychophysical experiments on a
desktop computer. The two main components of WinVis are WinVis for Matlab and WinVis Online.
WinVis for Matlab (W4M) is an extension to the Matlab language. With W4M you can create scripts to perform experiments with a very
high level of control.
WinVis Online consists of the online Stimulus, Trial, and Experiment editors. These allow you to design
experiments in an object-oriented environment, and allows you to easily combine existing Stimuli and Trials to create your own experiments.
Another important part of the WinVis suite is the Calibration Application and Look-up Table Generator.
The Calibration Application allows you to calibrate a computer monitor so you can easily convert from pixels to minutes of visual angle.
The Look-up Table Generator gives you control over the luminance of your monitor, whether you are simply linearizing a gray-scale or using
Look-up Tables to manipulate the image on the monitor.
What is a Machine License?
A machine license allows you to run WinVis programs in licensed mode on one computer. A license applies at the account level, meaning one license provides
access to all the WinVis features in your account. It is possible to purchase
multiple machine licenses if you need to run your experiments on multiple computers. You may use any computer to develop your
experiments, trials, and stimuli, but you may only use a licensed computer to run the programs in licensed mode. It is possible
to run WinVis programs in unlicensed mode on non-licensed computers. When running a WinVis program in unlicensed mode, it will
behave normally except that the program will be altered such that it will not be useful in an actual experiment.
What happens when my subscription expires?
When you subscribe to WinVis, you are signing up to receive our services for a certain amount of time. When that time is
up, you will lose access to our services. This means that if you want to continue running WinVis software, you will need
to renew your subscription. We offer long-term subscriptions so you won't have to worry about your subscription running out part way through
a series of experiments, and renewing your account is a quick and easy process.
How can I get more information before I sign up?
For the details of getting started there is a Quick-Start Guide. There are many resources on the WinVis website you can access without signing up. You can check out the Help Center
for general help on WinVis Online. The FAQ contains questions and answers about W4M and WinVis Online. The Forums are a great place
to communicate with the WinVis development team and other users, even if you don't have an account. For samples of what you can do with WinVis and W4M, check out the Sample W4M Scripts
and the WinVis Stimulus Gallery. If these resources don't answer your questions, please feel free to Contact Us.
